Method
Matcha Base
- 1
Sift the matcha powder into a small bowl or the top of your shaker to remove lumps.
- 2
Add the hot water (about 60 ml, ~175°F / 80°C) and the granulated sugar or simple syrup to the matcha.
- 3
Whisk vigorously in an M motion with a bamboo whisk or use a handheld frother for 20–30 seconds until the matcha is fully dissolved and a fine froth forms. Set aside to cool slightly.
Creamy Swirl
- 4
In the cocktail shaker or a separate jar, combine whole milk, heavy cream, vanilla extract and optional sweetened condensed milk if you prefer a sweeter, richer swirl.
- 5
Close the shaker and shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds until the mixture is slightly aerated and well combined. Alternatively, you can lightly froth with a handheld frother to create a silky texture.
Assemble Matcha Tornado
- 6
Prepare glass
Fill the tall glass about two-thirds full with crushed ice, then add the ice cubes so the glass is nearly full but not overflowing.
- 7
- 8
Immediately pour the creamy swirl mixture down the center of the glass in a steady stream. To create the tornado effect, use a long spoon or straw: insert it straight down near the center and twist gently while tilting the glass very slightly to encourage the cream to spiral down through the matcha.
- 9
If the layers mix too quickly, pour the cream more slowly or pour over the back of a spoon to control flow. The goal is visible spiraling/veining of white through green.
- 10
Dust the top with a light sprinkle of matcha powder (about 1/4 tsp) and finish with optional edible gold flakes or toasted white chocolate shavings for an elegant touch.
- 11
Serve immediately with a straw or long stirrer so the drinker can mix to taste.
Notes & Tips
- 12
Use high-quality ceremonial or culinary matcha for best color and flavor. Adjust sugar to taste; simple syrup mixes more easily than granulated sugar.
- 13
For a vegan version, substitute whole milk and heavy cream with oat or soy creamer and use coconut cream for richness.
- 14
To make it iced-blended (frozen tornado), blend the crushed ice with the creamy swirl mixture in a blender until slushy, then pour the chilled matcha over and swirl.
