Method
Main
- 1
Rinse rice
Place 1.5 cups long-grain white rice in a fine-mesh sieve or bowl. Rinse under cold running water, stirring with your hand, until the water runs nearly clear (about 30–60 seconds) to remove surface starch. Drain well.
- 2
Combine and bring to simmer
In a medium saucepan with a tight-fitting lid, add the rinsed rice, 2.25 cups water, 1/2 tsp fine sea salt, and 1 tbsp unsalted butter. Stir once to distribute. Place over medium-high heat and bring to a gentle boil (visible bubbles across surface) — about 4–6 minutes depending on your stove.
- 3
Reduce and simmer covered
As soon as the water reaches a steady simmer, reduce heat to low so the pot is barely simmering. Cover with the lid and cook undisturbed for 15 minutes. Do not lift the lid or stir during this time.
- 4
Rest off heat
After 15 minutes, remove the pot from heat but keep it covered. Let the rice steam and rest for an additional 10 minutes to finish cooking and firm up. Do not remove the lid during resting.
- 5
Fluff and serve
Remove the lid and use a fork to gently fluff the rice, separating the grains. Transfer to a serving bowl or plate.
