Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Peel and Cut Potatoes

Begin by peeling the Russet potatoes and cutting them into quarters. This will help them cook evenly.

  2. 2

    Boil Potatoes

Place the cut potatoes into a large pot and cover them with cold water. Add 1 tablespoon of salt. Bring the water to a boil over high heat, then reduce to medium heat and simmer for about 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.

Mashing

  1. 3

    Drain and Steam Dry

Once the potatoes are tender, drain them in a colander. Let them sit for a few minutes to allow any excess moisture to evaporate.

  2. 4

    Mash the Potatoes

Return the drained potatoes to the pot and add 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter. Use a potato masher or ricer to mash the potatoes until smooth and creamy.

  3. 5

    Add Dairy Ingredients

Pour in 1 cup of milk and 1 cup of sour cream into the mashed potatoes. Mix well until everything is combined and creamy.

Seasoning

  1. 6

    Season the Mashed Potatoes

Sprinkle in 1 teaspoon of black pepper and 1 teaspoon of garlic powder. Stir to combine. Taste and adjust seasoning if desired.

  2. 7

    Garnish (Optional)

If desired, chop 2 tablespoons of chives and sprinkle them on top of the mashed potatoes for added flavor and presentation.
