Sandwich Stack

Sandwich Stack
Prepare ingredients
Bring softened butter and Creamy Italian dressing to room temperature if chilled. Wash and pat dry lettuce leaves. Slice tomato into 4 even slices. If using block cheese, slice or shred mozzarella and cheddar so they will melt evenly.
Assemble ham and cheese stack
On one toasted slice (buttered side down), layer 4 slices of ham slightly overlapping to cover the bread. Top ham with the mozzarella and cheddar slices arranged so they overlap slightly. Place the second toasted bread slice on top (buttered side up if you prefer a golden exterior) and press gently to form a stack. Repeat with remaining 4 ham slices, cheese, and the third bread slice if building a double-stacked sandwich (optional). For a single stacked sandwich using all ingredients, stack ham–cheese–ham–cheese between two slices of bread so cheeses are in the middle layers.
Melt the cheese
Return the assembled sandwich to the warm skillet over low–medium heat. Cover the skillet with a lid to trap steam and help the cheeses melt evenly, checking after 2–4 minutes. When cheese is melted and sandwich is heated through, carefully flip once if you want both exterior sides browned (additional 1–2 minutes).
Add fresh elements
Remove the sandwich from the skillet and place on a cutting board. On the top interior slice (before closing), spread 2 tablespoons of Creamy Italian dressing evenly. Layer the washed lettuce leaves and 2 tomato slices. Season tomato lightly with about 1/2 teaspoon of salt and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper. If stacking a double, repeat dressing, lettuce, and tomato layers between the stacks as desired.
Finish and serve
Close the sandwich with the remaining toasted bread slice. Cut the sandwich in half or into quarters to show the stacked layers. Serve immediately with the remaining 2 tablespoons of Creamy Italian dressing on the side for dipping, or drizzle on top. Total sandwich yields a warm, melty ham-and-cheese stack with crisp lettuce and juicy tomato.
