Syrups & Mixes

Method

Syrups & Mixes

  1. 1

    Prepare simple syrup

If you don't have simple syrup ready, combine equal parts sugar and water in a small saucepan, heat gently until sugar dissolves, cool to room temperature and refrigerate. Use 3/4 oz for this recipe.

  2. 2

Measure fresh lemon and lime juice and grenadine into a small mixing container. Stir to incorporate.

Build the cocktail

  1. 3

In a mixing glass or small bottle suitable for bottling, add rye whiskey (1.25 oz) and apple brandy (0.75 oz).

  2. 4

Add the prepared simple syrup (0.75 oz), lemon juice (0.5 oz), lime juice (0.25 oz) and grenadine (0.25 oz) to the spirits.

  3. 5

Add 2 dashes of Angostura bitters.

  4. 6

Fill the mixing glass with ice and stir for 20–30 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted. If you are preparing a bottled serving to be consumed later, do not add soda before bottling — chill and bottle the mixed base; add soda when pouring.

Finish & Bottle

  1. 7

If serving immediately in a bottle intended as the finished drink (lightly carbonated bottle not required), add 1.5 oz chilled club soda directly to the mixed cocktail and gently stir once to combine. If bottling the uncarbonated base for later, omit soda from the bottle and instead top with soda when pouring into a glass.

  2. 8

Place one large ice cube or sphere into the serving bottle or a rocks glass. Pour the cocktail into the bottle or glass over the ice.

  3. 9

Express a lemon twist over the drink to release oils, rub the rim with the twist and drop it into the bottle/glass as garnish.

  4. 10

Seal the bottle if preparing for storage. If stored without soda, keep refrigerated and consume within 48 hours. If bottled with soda, consume immediately for best effervescence.
