Sandwich

Pan (optional warmed/grilled sandwich)

Method

Sandwich

  1. 1

    Prepare bread

Lay the 2 slices of bread flat on a cutting board. Spread softened butter evenly on the outer face of each slice (the side that will touch the skillet if warming). On the inner face of one slice, spread Dijon mustard; on the inner face of the other slice, spread mayonnaise if using.

  2. 2

    Assemble ham and cheese

Place the thinly sliced deli ham evenly on the mustard-spread slice, covering the bread but leaving a small margin. Layer the sharp cheddar slices on top of the ham.

  3. 3

    Add vegetables and pickles

Top the cheese with tomato slices, then the lettuce leaf, and arrange the 3 sweet pickle slices over the lettuce. Sprinkle black pepper to taste over the tomato or lettuce.

  4. 4

    Close sandwich

Place the second slice of bread, buttered side out, on top of the fillings to close the sandwich. Press gently to compress the sandwich slightly so the ingredients hold together.

  5. 5

    Cut and serve

Using a sharp knife, cut the sandwich diagonally or down the middle, as preferred. Serve immediately on a plate. If you like, serve with extra pickles or potato chips on the side.

Optional: Warmed / Grilled

  1. 6

    Heat skillet

Place a skillet or griddle over medium-low heat. Add 1 tsp unsalted butter and let it melt and coat the pan.

  2. 7

    Grill sandwich

Place the sandwich in the skillet buttered-side down. Cook on medium-low for about 2–3 minutes until golden brown, then carefully flip and cook the other side 2–3 minutes until golden and the cheese begins to melt. Reduce heat if browning too quickly.

  3. 8

    Rest briefly and serve warm

Remove the sandwich from the pan to a cutting board and let rest 1 minute so the cheese sets slightly. Cut and serve warm.
