Dough Preparation
1. Activate Yeast
In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
2. Make Dough
In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and olive oil. Mix until a dough forms.
3. Knead Dough
Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
4. First Rise
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Shaping and Boiling
5. Shape Bagels
Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball, then poke a hole in the center with your finger and stretch it to form a bagel shape.
6. Boil Bagels
Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully drop bagels into the boiling water, 2-3 at a time. Boil for 1-2 minutes on each side, then remove with a slotted spoon.
Baking
7. Preheat Oven
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) while bagels are boiling.
8. Add Toppings
Place boiled bagels on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. For 'Everything' bagels, sprinkle with everything bagel seasoning or your choice of seeds and salt.
9. Bake
Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
