Method
Cake Base Preparation
Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour an 8-inch round cake pan.
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt until evenly combined.
Add Eggs and Vanilla
Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
Bake the Cake
Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Cool the Cake
Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Then, turn it out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
Ice Cream Layer Assembly
Prepare the Ice Cream
Once the cake is cooled, place the cake back into the clean cake pan. Soften the vanilla ice cream slightly at room temperature for about 10 minutes.
Layer the Ice Cream
Spread the softened vanilla ice cream over the top of the cake, smoothing it out evenly. Place the cake in the freezer for at least 2 hours, or until the ice cream is firm.
Meringue Topping Preparation
Whip Egg Whites
In a clean, dry mixing bowl, beat the egg whites with an electric mixer on medium speed until foamy.
Add Cream of Tartar
Add the cream of tartar to the egg whites and continue beating until soft peaks form.
Add Sugar Gradually
Gradually add the granulated sugar, one tablespoon at a time, while continuing to beat on high speed until stiff peaks form and the meringue is glossy.
Add Vanilla
Add the vanilla extract and mix until well incorporated.
Baking the Alaska
Preheat the Oven
Preheat the oven to 500°F (260°C) or use a kitchen torch for browning the meringue.
Cover the Ice Cream
Remove the cake from the freezer and spread the meringue topping over the ice cream layer, ensuring it completely covers the ice cream and seals in the edges.
Bake or Torch
Place the cake in the preheated oven for 3-5 minutes, or until the meringue is golden brown. Alternatively, use a kitchen torch to brown the meringue evenly.
Serve
Remove from the oven, let it cool slightly, and slice to serve. Enjoy your Baked Alaska!
