Cigar Components

Method

Cigar Components

  1. 1

    Prepare filler blend

Sort the Dominican and Nicaraguan long-filler tobacco by vein size and desired strength. Create a balanced filler blend totaling about 18 g per 5.5" corona (44 ring gauge): use 10 g Dominican (mix of seco and ligero for sweetness and aroma) and 8 g Nicaraguan (viso/ligero for body and spice). Remove any excessively thick stems; keep small central ribs for structure. Lightly massage leaves to ensure even moisture—target pliable but not wet (about 60–65% relative humidity).

  2. 2

    Bunch the filler

Form the blended filler into a tight, even bunch by layering small sections of filler and rolling them between your palms on the rolling board to create an even cylinder roughly 44 ring gauge in diameter. Ensure the bunch is consistent along its length and slightly tapered toward one end for authentic corona shape. Use the bunching thread sparingly to hold the bunch if needed.

  3. 3

    Apply the binder

Place the bunched filler on the Nicaraguan binder leaf. Roll the binder tightly around the bunch with your thumbs, keeping even tension to maintain shape and diameter. Overlap the binder by a small margin and lightly moisten the edge with a dab of water to seal. Trim excess binder so the seam is neat and the cylinder remains close to 5.5" in length before final wrapping.

Construction Supplies

  1. 4

    Press the bunch

Insert the bunched and bindered cigar into a 44 ring gauge cigar mold and press for 20–30 minutes (or per mold instructions). If using a cigar press, apply gentle even pressure to set the shape. Pressing firms the roll and ensures uniform density along the length.

  2. 5

    Prepare the wrapper

Select a premium Connecticut wrapper leaf that is soft, elastic, and free of large veins or blemishes. If needed, adjust humidity by lightly misting and letting it rest until pliable. Cut a wrapper piece slightly longer than 5.5" and wide enough to cover the ring gauge with minimal overlap.

  3. 6

    Wrap the cigar

Remove the pressed bunch from the mold. Place the bindered bunch on the wrapper leaf with the seam of the binder facing down. Beginning at the foot, roll the wrapper tight and smoothly over the binder, keeping even tension and smoothing out any wrinkles. Leave approximately 0.5" at the head for the cap. Moisten the wrapper edge or apply a small amount (about 1/4 tsp) of pectin/starch glue to secure the wrapper seam at the head area. Trim any excess wrapper at the foot for a clean finish.

  4. 7

    Form the cap

Use the chaveta to cut a small piece of wrapper leaf for the cap. Apply a tiny dab of water and place the cap on the head, shaping and pinching to create a classic rounded triple-cap (or triple cap style). Smooth the cap seam carefully so it sits snugly against the wrapper without tearing.

Finishing

  1. 8

    Final shaping and finishing

If desired, place the wrapped cigar back into the mold for a short final press (10–15 minutes) to set the wrapper and improve finish. Inspect the cigar for even density, no soft spots, and a smooth wrapper with no gaps. Trim the foot if necessary so it is flush and reveals the filler evenly.

  2. 9

    Resting and humidification

Place the finished Romeo y Julieta Reserva Real-style corona (5.5" x 44) in a humidor set to 65–68% relative humidity and 68–70°F (20–21°C). Allow the cigar to rest for a minimum of 7 days to let the wrapper settle and flavors marry; for best results, rest 2–4 weeks for smoother integration of flavors and improved draw. Maintain stable humidity during resting.

  3. 10

    Serving suggestion

This mild-to-medium cigar is ready to light after resting. Toast the foot evenly with a butane lighter or cedar spill, puff gently to establish an even burn, and enjoy the toasty aroma and smooth character inherent to a Connecticut-wrapped Dominican/Nicaraguan filler blend.
