Preparation

Preparing Leaves and Blend

1. Select and condition leaves

Remove the Connecticut wrapper leaf and Dominican binder from humidor. Lay them flat on a cedar board. Allow leaves to relax for 15–30 minutes so they become pliable but not wet. If too dry, lightly mist the leaves (1–2 sprays of distilled water) and let rest 10 minutes.

2. Sort filler

Take the Dominican long-filler and sort into three groups: mostly ligero/seco for flavor pockets (about 15–20% of total by weight) and the remainder for smooth cuerpo. For a mild-to-medium profile with cedar and vanilla notes, aim for about 80% smoother, sweeter binder filler and 20% ligero for top-end spice and draw.

3. Create the filler bunch

Assemble the chosen filler strands into a cigar-shaped bunch on the cedar board. Align stems so the bunch is tapered for a Torpedo or cylindrical for a Robusto. Ensure the bunch is even in thickness along its length to maintain consistent draw.

Rolling and Binding

4. Apply the binder

Place the binder leaf under the filler bunch. Using your fingers, begin rolling the binder around the bunch with moderate pressure to form a tight core. Use a small amount of edible pectin or wheat paste at the binder seam to secure the edge (about 1–2 ml).

5. Press in mold

Place the bound filler and binder into the appropriate mold for the chosen shape (Robusto or No.2 Torpedo). If making a Torpedo, slightly taper the head by adjusting filler before inserting. Close the mold and press for 30–60 minutes to set the shape.

Wrapping

6. Prepare the wrapper

While the bundle is in the mold, recondition the Connecticut wrapper leaf if needed (gentle misting, then let rest 5–10 minutes). Trim the wrapper to size so it will cover the entire cigar with minimal overlap.

7. Wrap the cigar

Remove the pressed bunch from the mold and place it on the center of the wrapper. Beginning at the head end, roll the wrapper around the binder with a steady, even pressure, keeping the seam tight and nearly invisible. Use a thin bead of cigar glue along the final seam (about 1–2 ml) to fix it in place. For a Torpedo, shape the head into a pointed cap as you wrap; for a Robusto keep it rounded.

8. Cap the head

Form and apply a triple cap: take a small piece of wrapper leaf, cut into a rounded cap, glue and press onto the cigar head, then add a second and third cap to secure and produce a clean finish. Use the chaveta or scissors to trim any excess.

Finishing and Resting

9. Trim the foot

Evenly trim the foot to expose filler slightly for ignition. For a Torpedo leave a small taper at the foot if desired. Ensure the foot is neat for even light.

10. Initial rest

Place finished cigars in a humidor or cedar box set to 68–70% RH and 65–70°F (18–21°C). Let rest for 2–7 days to allow wrapper seam and cap to set and moisture to equilibrate.

11. Aging for flavor

For improved cedar and vanilla notes and smoother burn, age the cigars for 4–8 weeks (or longer). Monitor humidity and temperature, rotating cigars occasionally for even aging.

12. Final trim and code

Before packaging or smoking, inspect each cigar for tightness, evenness, and cap security. Make any final trims to the cap or foot. Optionally band the cigar and label shape and size (5.0" x 52 Robusto or 6.1" x 52 No.2 Torpedo).
