Cigar Blend (for 1 Robusto-sized cigar, 5.5" x 50)

Method

Prepare Infusions and Flavored Strips

  1. 1

    Make espresso infusion

Brew a very concentrated espresso (or use instant espresso dissolved) and allow it to cool. Measure 2 ml of the concentrated espresso and set aside. This will be used to lightly dampen select filler leaves to impart roasted espresso notes. Do not soak — aim to lightly moisten.

  2. 2

    Prepare cocoa strips

Take a small piece of base tobacco leaf and lightly dust or mist with a cocoa extract or infuse by briefly massaging a 1 g portion of shredded tobacco with a drop of natural cocoa extract until evenly coated. Allow to dry briefly so it is flavorful but not wet.

Leaf Selection and Conditioning

  1. 3

Select a dark maduro wrapper leaf approximately the size needed for a 5.5" x 50 cigar. Inspect for elasticity, oiliness and lack of blemishes. If too dry, place in a humidification environment (65–70% RH) for a few hours until pliable.

  2. 4

Select a quarter binder leaf (Nicaraguan binder). Condition the binder in the same humidity for at least 1–2 hours so it is flexible and will adhere to the filler bundle.

Blend and Bunch the Filler

  1. 5

Weigh and prepare the filler components: 6 g ligero, 4 g seco, 3 g viso. Lay them out and remove any large stems. The ratio gives a mild-to-medium profile with body from ligero, smoothness from seco and flavor from viso.

  2. 6

Lightly moisten two or three of the filler pieces with the 2 ml espresso infusion: distribute the espresso by spraying or dabbing and then gently massaging so flavor penetrates without making the filler soggy. Incorporate the 1 g of cocoa-infused tobacco strips evenly into the filler mass to provide cocoa notes without overwhelming the blend.

  3. 7

Bunch the filler: form a compact, even filler bunch by rolling the blended filler leaves together lengthwise into a cylindrical bundle sized for a 50 ring gauge. Make sure the bunch is consistent in density from head to foot to ensure an even draw.

Assemble Binder and Wrapper

  1. 8

Place the binder leaf on a flat surface, vein-side down. Position the filler bunch along the center of the binder and wrap the binder around the bunch snugly but not tightly, tucking the edges under to form a smooth cylinder. Use minimal pectin or natural binder paste (about 1 tsp total, used sparingly) to secure the binder seam if needed.

  2. 9

Transfer the bound filler to a 50 ring gauge rolling mold or use your hands to shape. Press lightly in the mold for a few minutes to even out the shape. If using a press, apply light pressure only — avoid crushing the filler.

  3. 10

Lay the maduro wrapper leaf on a flat, clean surface with the smooth side up. Trim the wrapper to the proper length so it will overlap slightly when wrapped around the binder; keep the head area slightly wider to allow for cap formation.

  4. 11

Brush a thin line of pectin paste along the edge of the wrapper leaf where it will seal. Carefully wrap the wrapper around the binder, smoothing out any wrinkles with the palms of your hands. Maintain even pressure and keep the cigar straight. Ensure the wrapper seam is tight and smooth.

  5. 12

Form the cap: use the chaveta or cigar knife to trim the head to shape. Apply a small amount of pectin paste and form a triple cap (or single cap) with a small piece of wrapper leaf. Smooth the cap and allow to set for a few minutes.

Resting, Drying and Aging

  1. 13

Place the freshly rolled cigar in a humidification tray or molded slot upright for an initial drying/rest period of 24–48 hours at 62–64% RH and 18–20°C (64–68°F). This helps the wrapper and binder heal and the cap to set.

  2. 14

After the initial set, move the cigar to a humidor or sealed container maintained at 65–68% RH and 18–21°C (65–70°F) to age. Age for at least 2 weeks for a basic mellowing; for a more integrated cocoa and espresso profile, age 4–8 weeks. Longer aging (3–6 months) will further marry flavors and reduce any sharpness from the espresso infusion.

Quality Check and Final Prep

  1. 15

Inspect the cigar for firmness by gently squeezing along its length — it should have slight give but no soft spots. Examine the cap to ensure it is secure. Check for even color and seam integrity on the wrapper.

  2. 16

If necessary, lightly rehumidify any dry areas by exposing the cigar briefly to 65–68% RH conditions. Do not over-humidify.

Smoking/Serving

  1. 17

To smoke, cut the cap cleanly with a cigar cutter or cut with the chaveta. Toast the foot evenly with a butane lighter or cedar spills, rotating the cigar until the foot is uniformly charred. Draw gently—Java Maduro is designed as a mild-to-medium cigar with cocoa and espresso notes and a balanced Nicaraguan tobacco backbone. Enjoy in 45–60 minute sessions depending on puff frequency.
