Condition wrapper and binder

Lightly mist the Connecticut wrapper leaf and the Honduran binder leaf with water from the spray bottle so they become pliable but not soggy. Wrap each in a slightly damp cloth and let rest 20–30 minutes until flexible for rolling.

Weigh and blend filler

Weigh approximately 8 g of Honduran filler tobacco. For a balanced mild Robusto, blend about 70% long filler and 30% short filler by mass (e.g., 5.6 g long + 2.4 g short). Spread the filler on the cutting board and lightly fluff to remove clumps and ensure even distribution.

Form the bunch

Arrange the filler leaves into a compact, even bundle (the bunch) approximating the 50 ring gauge diameter. Place long filler in the center and incorporate short filler around it for consistent draw and burn. Compress the bundle lightly in your palms to eliminate large air pockets.

Apply binder and shape

Place the Honduran binder leaf on the work surface with shiny side down. Put the formed bunch at one end and roll the binder around it, overlapping slightly. Use the chaveta or knife to trim any excess binder. Apply a thin bead (about 1 tsp) of natural vegetable gum along the binder edge and seal. Place the sealed bunch into the cigar mold sized for a 50 ring gauge and Robusto length; press for 20–30 minutes to set the shape. If using a press, light pressure is sufficient.

Wrap with Connecticut wrapper

Remove the bunch from the mold. Lay the conditioned Connecticut wrapper leaf flat with the smoother side out. Position the bunch near the wrapper edge and roll tightly but smoothly, keeping consistent tension to avoid wrinkles. Trim the wrapper so it overlaps slightly. Moisten the wrapper edge with a small amount (about 1 tsp) of vegetable gum and seal the cigar. Use your thumbs to smooth the wrapper and shape the cigar into a classic Robusto (5.0" length, 50 ring gauge).

Finish the cap

Create a three-piece cap or a simple pigtail cap from a small piece of wrapper: wrap a thin strip around the head and apply a tiny amount of gum to secure. Use the chaveta to trim cleanly and shape the head into a rounded, attractive finish.

Banding and initial rest

Slide the cigar band onto the finished cigar near the head. Place the finished cigar flat in the humidor or humidified box at 65–70% relative humidity and 65–70°F (18–21°C). Let rest for at least 48 hours to allow the wrapper to settle and the glue to cure; for best results, let rest 1–2 weeks to harmonize flavors.

Testing

After resting, inspect the cigar for any soft spots or unraveling. If needed, re-seal cap or wrapper edges. When satisfied, cut the cap neatly with a guillotine or punch and light to evaluate the toasty, mild profile and sweet finish characteristic of a Honduran filler with Connecticut wrapper.

Store finished Baccarat cigars in the humidor at 65–70% RH and 65–70°F. Serve one cigar per session; typical smoking time for a 5.0"x50 Robusto is about 45–60 minutes, depending on draw and puff rate.
