Crispy Calamari Ingredients
Method
Crispy Calamari Directions
Prepare the Calamari
Rinse the calamari rings under cold water and pat dry with paper towels.
Make the Breading
In a shallow bowl, mix the flour, cornmeal, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper.
Prepare the Wet Mix
In another bowl, whisk together the egg and buttermilk until well combined.
Coat the Calamari
Dip each calamari ring first in the wet mixture, then in the flour mixture, coating evenly.
Heat the Oil
In a large pot or deep fryer, heat the vegetable oil to 375°F (190°C).
Fry the Calamari
Carefully add the coated calamari rings to the hot oil in batches, frying for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towels.
Prepare the Shrimp
While the calamari is frying, rinse and pat dry the shrimp. Season lightly with salt and pepper.
Cook the Shrimp
In a skillet over medium-high heat, sauté the shrimp for about 3-4 minutes until pink and cooked through.
Serve
Plate the crispy calamari and shrimp together, serve with spicy tomato sauce, garnish with fresh parsley, and lemon wedges on the side.
