Espresso Martini

Equipment & optional

Method

Espresso Martini

1

Chill glass

Place a martini or coupe glass in the freezer for at least 10 minutes or fill with ice water while you prepare the cocktail so the drink stays cold and the crema holds.

2

Brew espresso

Brew a fresh shot of espresso (about 1 oz). Ideally use a dark roast; let the espresso rest 20–30 seconds so it cools slightly but remains hot enough to create good crema when shaken.

3

Combine ingredients

Add 2 oz vodka, 1 oz freshly brewed espresso, 1 oz coffee liqueur, and 0.5 oz simple syrup into a cocktail shaker.

4

Add ice and dry shake

Add a generous handful of ice (about 1 cup) to the shaker. Seal and shake vigorously for 10–12 seconds to chill and dilute.

5

Wet shake for crema

(Optional but recommended) Briefly (5–7 seconds) open, remove some ice if needed, then reseal and shake very vigorously for another 8–10 seconds to produce a thick, foamy crema from the espresso.

6

Double strain

Using the shaker's strainer and a fine mesh strainer, pour the cocktail into the chilled glass to remove small ice shards and ensure a silky texture.

7

Garnish and serve

Garnish with 3 whole coffee beans placed on the crema. Serve immediately.

Equipment & cleanup

8

Rinse the shaker and strainers with warm water. If you used the glass for chilling with ice water, empty and dry it before serving. Clean espresso equipment as usual.
