Method

Filling Preparation

  1. 1

    Cook the meat

In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground lamb or beef. Cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks, about 5-7 minutes.

  2. 2

    Add vegetables

Add the diced onion, carrots, and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook for an additional 5 minutes until the vegetables are softened.

  3. 3

    Incorporate other filling ingredients

Stir in the tomato paste, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, and dried thyme. Bring to a simmer and let cook for 10 minutes until slightly thickened.

  4. 4

    Add peas

Remove the skillet from heat and stir in the frozen peas. Set the filling aside.

Mashed Potatoes Preparation

  1. 5

    Boil the potatoes

Place the peeled and cubed potatoes in a large pot and cover with cold water. Bring to a boil and cook until tender, about 15-20 minutes.

  2. 6

    Mash the potatoes

Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Add the butter, milk, salt, and black pepper. Mash until smooth and creamy.

Assembling and Baking

  1. 7

    Preheat the oven

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).

  2. 8

    Layer the filling

In a baking dish, spread the meat filling evenly on the bottom.

  3. 9

    Top with mashed potatoes

Spoon the mashed potatoes over the meat filling, spreading it out to cover completely.

  4. 10

    Bake the pie

Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until the top is golden brown.

  5. 11

    Serve

Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy your Shepherd's Pie!
