Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Activate Yeast

In a small bowl, combine warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

  2. 2

    Mix Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Once the yeast is frothy, pour it into the flour mixture and stir until a dough forms.

  3. 3

    Knead Dough

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm area for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Shaping and Boiling

  1. 4

    Shape Pretzel Nubs

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into small pieces about the size of a golf ball. Roll each piece into a small nub shape.

  2. 5

    Boil Dough

In a large pot, bring water to a boil and add the baking soda. Drop the pretzel nubs into the boiling water for about 30 seconds, then remove them and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

  3. 6

    Egg Wash

Beat the egg and brush it over each pretzel nub to give them a golden color when baked.

Baking and Topping

  1. 7

    Bake

Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Sprinkle coarse sea salt over the pretzel nubs and bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.

  2. 8

    Prepare Toppings

While the pretzel nubs are baking, prepare your savory toppings by heating the queso dip and mustard in separate bowls.

  3. 9

    Sweet Option

Mix the sugar and cinnamon in a bowl. Once the pretzel nubs are out of the oven, brush them with melted butter and sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture on top. Serve with caramel sauce for dipping.
