Method

Prepare the Beef Patty

  1. 1

    Form the Patty

In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently and form into two 8oz patties, ensuring they are slightly larger than the buns to account for shrinkage during cooking.

  2. 2

    Cook the Patty

Preheat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side for medium doneness, or until they reach an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C). During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of white American cheese on each patty and cover until melted.

Make the Onion Jam

  1. 3

    Sauté Onions

In a saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they become soft and translucent, about 10 minutes.

  2. 4

    Caramelize the Onions

Add the brown sugar and balsamic vinegar to the onions. Continue to cook, stirring frequently, until the onions are deeply caramelized and the mixture is thickened, about 15-20 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.

Prepare the Garage Sauce

  1. 5

    Mix the Sauce

In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, and smoked paprika. Stir until well combined and set aside.

Assemble the Burger

  1. 6

    Toast the Buns

Lightly toast the Hawaiian buns on the grill or in a toaster until golden brown.

  2. 7

    Build the Burger

Spread a generous amount of garage sauce on the bottom half of each toasted bun. Place the cheesy beef patty on top, followed by a spoonful of onion jam. Cap with the top half of the bun.
