1

Chill glass

Place a chilled martini or coupe glass in the freezer for at least 5 minutes, or fill it with ice water while you prepare the drink.

2

Prepare espresso

Brew a fresh shot (about 1 oz) of espresso and let it cool for 1–2 minutes. If you don't have an espresso machine, use very strong brewed coffee concentrated to about 1 oz.

3

Combine ingredients

Add the vodka (2 oz), coffee liqueur (1 oz), cooled espresso (1 oz), and simple syrup (1/2 oz) to a cocktail shaker. Fill the shaker about two-thirds full with ice (approximately 1 cup).

4

Dry shake (optional for foam)

For a silkier, foamy crema: first shake the ingredients vigorously without ice for 10–12 seconds (dry shake).

5

Wet shake

Add ice to the shaker if you did the dry shake (or if you didn't, it should already contain ice) and shake vigorously for 12–18 seconds until the shaker is well chilled and you feel the outside frost.

6

Strain

Discard the ice from the chilled glass (if used). Double strain the drink into the chilled glass using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine mesh strainer to catch small ice chips and ensure a smooth texture. Pour gently to preserve the crema on top.

7

Garnish and serve

Garnish with 3 coffee beans placed on the crema. Serve immediately.
