Jarritos (Mexican-style fruit soda) — single-batch
Jarritos-style Fruit Syrup (makes ~1 cup — use to flavor soda)
Variation: Agua Fresca-style Drinks (non-carbonated)
Variation: Michelada-style Savory Beer Cocktail (for variety)
Variation: Sparkling Paloma (citrus soda cocktail)
Method
Jarritos-style Fruit Syrup (make first if using homemade)
- 1
Combine 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water in a small saucepan over medium heat.
- 2
Add 1 cup chopped fruit (choose tamarind, guava, mandarin/orange, pineapple, mango, or strawberries). If using tamarind paste, break it up and add directly.
- 3
Bring to a gentle simmer, stirring until the sugar dissolves. Simmer 6–8 minutes until fruit softens and mixture thickens slightly.
- 4
Remove from heat, stir in 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice and 1 teaspoon lime zest (if using) to brighten flavors.
- 5
Let cool slightly, then puree the mixture in a blender until smooth. Strain through a fine mesh sieve into a bowl to remove solids, pressing with a spoon to extract as much liquid as possible.
- 6
Cool syrup to room temperature. You should have about 1 cup of concentrated fruit syrup; refrigerate up to 2 weeks in a sealed container.
Jarritos (assemble single-serving soda)
- 7
Fill a tall glass with 2 cups of ice cubes.
- 8
Pour 1 cup carbonated water (or 1 cup chilled Jarritos soda if using store-bought) over the ice.
- 9
Add 1 cup fruit syrup to the carbonated water and gently stir once or twice to combine. Taste and adjust: if too sweet, add up to 2 tablespoons more carbonated water; if too weak, add 1–2 tablespoons more syrup.
- 10
Add 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice and stir gently.
- 11
Garnish with a lime wedge and a sprig of mint if desired. Serve immediately with a straw.
Agua Fresca-style Drinks (non-carbonated variation)
- 12
Place 3 cups chopped fruit or fruit puree in a blender with 4 cups cold water, 1 tablespoon sugar or agave, and 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice.
- 13
Blend until smooth, about 30–45 seconds. Taste and add more sweetener or lime if needed.
- 14
Strain through a fine mesh sieve into a pitcher to remove pulp (optional for a clearer drink).
- 15
Chill or serve over ice. Garnish with mint or basil leaves if desired. Keep refrigerated and consume within 48 hours.
Michelada-style Beer Cocktail (savory variation)
- 16
Combine 1 teaspoon salt and chili powder on a small plate. Rub a lime wedge around the rim of a pint glass and dip the rim into the salt-chili mix to coat.
- 17
Fill the glass halfway with ice. Add 3 oz tomato juice or Clamato, 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice, 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, 1 teaspoon soy sauce (optional), and 3 dashes hot sauce. Stir to combine.
- 18
- 19
Garnish with a lime wedge and serve immediately.
Sparkling Paloma (citrus soda cocktail)
- 20
- 21
Add 1.5 oz tequila blanco (optional) and 0.5 oz fresh lime juice to the glass.
- 22
Pour 3 oz grapefruit soda (or 3 oz grapefruit juice plus 1 oz carbonated water) over the ice and gently stir once to combine.
- 23
Garnish with a grapefruit slice or lime wedge and serve.
