Method

Preparation Steps

  1. 1

    Chop the Vegetables

Finely chop the onion and mince the garlic cloves. Set aside.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Tomatoes

If using canned whole tomatoes, crush them by hand in a large bowl or use a blender for a smoother texture.

Cooking Steps

  1. 3

    Sauté the Vegetables

In a medium saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté for about 5 minutes until softened. Then add the minced garlic and sauté for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

  2. 4

    Add Tomatoes and Seasoning

Add the crushed tomatoes to the saucepan along with dried oregano, dried basil, salt, black pepper, and sugar. Stir to combine.

  3. 5

    Simmer the Sauce

Bring the sauce to a simmer over medium heat. Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer uncovered for about 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency.

Final Steps

  1. 6

    Taste and Adjust

Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning with additional salt or pepper if needed.

  2. 7

    Cool and Store

Allow the sauce to cool before transferring it to a pint-sized container for storage. This recipe makes approximately 16oz.
