Method

Beef Patty Preparation

  1. 1

    Form the Patty

In a bowl, mix the ground beef with salt and black pepper. Shape the mixture into a patty about 3/4 inch thick.

  2. 2

    Cook the Patty

Preheat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patty for about 4-5 minutes on each side or until it reaches your desired doneness.

Grilled Onions Preparation

  1. 3

    Slice the Onion

    Thinly slice the medium onion.

  2. 4

    Cook the Onions

In a separate skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are caramelized and golden brown, about 10-15 minutes.

Assemble the Patty Melt

  1. 5

    Prepare the Bread

Spread butter on one side of each slice of rye bread.

  2. 6

    Layer the Ingredients

In a skillet over medium heat, place two slices of rye bread, buttered side down. On each slice, add a slice of American cheese, the beef patty, grilled onions, and then a slice of Swiss cheese. Top with the remaining slices of rye bread, buttered side up.

  3. 7

    Grill the Sandwich

Cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.

Serving

  1. 8

    Serve

Remove the patty melt from the skillet, slice in half if desired, and serve hot with your choice of sides.
