Method

Pasta Preparation

  1. 1

    Cook Spaghetti

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add spaghetti and cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 8-10 minutes. Stir occasionally.

  2. 2

    Drain Spaghetti

Once cooked, drain the spaghetti in a colander and set aside, reserving a bit of the pasta water for later use.

Tomato Sauce Preparation

  1. 3

    Heat Olive Oil

In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat until shimmering.

  2. 4

    Sauté Garlic

Add minced garlic to the pan and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant, being careful not to burn it.

  3. 5

    Add Tomatoes

Pour in the canned tomatoes along with their juices. Use a wooden spoon to break them up a bit.

  4. 6

    Season the Sauce

Stir in the basil leaves, salt, black pepper, and sugar. Bring the sauce to a simmer. Let it cook for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally until it thickens slightly.

Combine and Serve

  1. 7

    Combine Pasta and Sauce

Add the drained spaghetti to the sauce, tossing to coat evenly. If the sauce is too thick, add a little reserved pasta water to reach desired consistency.

  2. 8

    Serve

Plate the spaghetti and garnish with grated Parmesan cheese. Serve immediately.
