Method

Cake Preparation

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare two 9-inch round cake pans by greasing and flouring them.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.

  3. 3

    Combine Wet Ingredients

In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract until smooth.

  4. 4

    Combine Mixtures

Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Carefully stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth and well incorporated.

  5. 5

    Bake the Cake

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans and bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  6. 6

    Cool the Cakes

Once baked, remove the cakes from the oven and allow them to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Gooey Center Preparation

  1. 7

    Prepare the Ganache

In a small saucepan over low heat, combine the semi-sweet chocolate chips and heavy cream. Stir until the chocolate is melted and the mixture is smooth. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.

  2. 8

    Create the Center

Once the cakes are completely cooled, cut a shallow layer off the top of one of the cakes to create a flat surface. Pour the chocolate ganache into the center of the cake, allowing it to spread towards the edges.

  3. 9

    Assemble the Cake

Place the second cake layer on top of the first layer with the ganache. The ganache will create a gooey center when sliced.

Frosting Preparation

  1. 10

    Make the Frosting

In a medium mixing bowl, beat the unsalted butter until creamy. Gradually add the cocoa powder and powdered sugar, alternating with the whole milk until the frosting reaches your desired consistency. Stir in the vanilla extract.

  2. 11

    Frost the Cake

Spread the frosting evenly over the top and sides of the assembled cake. Decorate as desired.
