Whisky + Flavoring

Method

Prepare Glass

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a Collins or highball glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the ingredients to ensure the drink stays cold longer.

  2. 2

Discard any ice water and add one large clear ice cube (or several large cubes) to the chilled glass.

Build Cocktail

  1. 3

    Measure whisky and bitters

Pour 2 oz honey-washed Ohishi whisky into a jigger and add to the glass over the prepared ice. Add 3 dashes of cardamom bitters directly into the whisky in the glass.

  2. 4

    Express lemon oils

Take a fresh lemon peel twist, hold it over the glass with the outer (yellow) side facing down and give it a firm squeeze to express oils across the surface of the drink; optionally run the peel around the rim and drop it in.

  3. 5

    Top with soda

Slowly pour 4.5 oz very cold Q Club Soda down the inside of the glass or over the back of a spoon to preserve carbonation and gently lift the spirit into the soda. This yields a roughly 1:2.25 spirit-to-soda ratio typical for a highball.

  4. 6

Give the drink one gentle stir (1–2 rotations) using a bar spoon to integrate the bitters without losing effervescence.

Garnish & Finish

  1. 7

Lightly crack one green cardamom pod with the back of a spoon to bruise it and release aroma, then float it on top of the drink. Optionally add a thin lemon wheel or the expressed lemon twist as additional garnish.

  2. 8

Serve immediately with a straw or without; advise the drinker to sip and enjoy the interplay of honeyed whisky and warm cardamom aromatics against the bright effervescence of Q Club Soda.
