Method
Fresh Juice
Prepare oranges
Wash the oranges under cool running water and dry them. Roll each orange on the counter with moderate pressure to help release the juice. Cut each orange in half crosswise.
Juice the oranges
Using a manual citrus juicer (handheld reamer or countertop press), juice each orange half into a large bowl or pitcher. If using an electric juicer, follow the manufacturer's instructions. Strain the collected juice through a fine-mesh sieve into the pitcher if you prefer pulp-free juice; skip straining if you want pulp.
Adjust consistency and sweetness (optional)
Taste the fresh juice. If it is too thick or intense, stir in up to 1/4 cup filtered water to reach desired consistency. If you prefer sweeter juice, dissolve up to 1 tablespoon granulated sugar (or 1 tablespoon simple syrup) into a small amount of warm water and stir into the juice until fully incorporated. Adjust to taste.
Chill and serve
If serving immediately chilled, add ice cubes to glasses or pour juice over ice. For best flavor, refrigerate the juice in a covered pitcher for 30 minutes to an hour to chill and let flavors meld. Stir before serving. Serve in regular (about 12 oz) or small (about 8 oz) portions as desired.
Storage
Store any leftover juice in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 48 hours. Shake or stir well before serving, as natural separation may occur.
