Method
Oatmeal base
Bring liquids to a simmer
In a small saucepan, combine 1.5 cups water, 0.5 cups milk, and 1 tsp salt. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat.
Cook oats
Add 1 cup rolled oats to the simmering liquid. Reduce heat to medium-low and cook, stirring frequently, for 6–8 minutes until oats are tender and creamy. If mixture becomes too thick, stir in up to 2–4 tablespoons extra water or milk to reach desired consistency.
Finish oatmeal
Remove saucepan from heat. Stir in 2 tbsp brown sugar, 1/2 tsp vanilla extract, and 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon until dissolved and evenly combined. Taste and adjust sweetness.
Sweeteners & mix-ins
Stir 3 tbsp raisins into the warm oatmeal immediately after finishing so they plump slightly. If you prefer softer raisins, soak them in warm water for 5–10 minutes beforehand and drain.
Granola topping
Spoon the cooked oatmeal into a serving bowl. Sprinkle 1/2 cup granola evenly over the top, then scatter 2 tbsp toasted chopped nuts for crunch and flavor.
Fresh fruit & garnish
Arrange 1/2 sliced banana, 1/2 cup mixed fresh berries, and 1/4 sliced apple over the granola. Drizzle 1 tbsp honey or maple syrup over everything for brightness and extra sweetness.
Optional add-ins
If desired, add 2 tbsp plain yogurt on the side or dolloped on top, and sprinkle 1 tsp chia seeds or ground flaxseed for nutrition. Serve immediately while oatmeal is warm and granola stays crunchy.
