Patty Melt Ingredients

Method

Cooking Directions

  1. 1

    Prepare the onions

Slice the onion into thin rings. In a skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Add the onions and sauté until they are caramelized and golden brown, about 10-15 minutes. Set aside.

  2. 2

    Cook the beef patties

While the onions are cooking, form the ground beef into two equal patties. Season both sides with salt and black pepper. In the same skillet, increase the heat to medium-high and cook the patties for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired doneness.

  3. 3

    Add cheese

During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of Swiss cheese on each patty and cover the skillet to help the cheese melt.

  4. 4

    Assemble the patty melt

Spread butter on one side of each slice of rye bread. On the unbuttered side of two slices, layer the cooked patties with melted cheese, sautéed onions, and a slice of American cheese. Top with the other slice of bread, buttered side up.

  5. 5

    Grill the sandwich

In the same skillet, reduce the heat to medium. Grill the sandwiches until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per side. Press down gently with a spatula while cooking.

  6. 6

    Serve

Remove from the skillet, cut in half, and serve immediately.
