Method

Cooking Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil Elbow Macaroni

In a large pot, bring water to a rolling boil. Add 2 cups of elbow macaroni and cook according to package instructions, usually about 8-10 minutes, until al dente.

  2. 2

    Drain and Set Aside

Once the macaroni is cooked, drain it in a colander and set it aside.

Making Cheese Sauce

  1. 3

    Melt Butter

In the same pot, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat.

  2. 4

    Create Roux

Once the butter is melted, whisk in 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour. Cook for about 1 minute, stirring constantly, until it turns a light golden color.

  3. 5

    Add Milk

Gradually whisk in 2 cups of milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Continue whisking until the mixture thickens, about 5 minutes.

  4. 6

    Add Cheese and Seasonings

Remove the pot from heat and stir in 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese, 0.5 teaspoon of salt, 0.25 teaspoon of black pepper, 0.5 teaspoon of garlic powder, and 0.5 teaspoon of mustard powder until the cheese is completely melted and the sauce is smooth.

Combining

  1. 7

    Combine Pasta and Sauce

Add the drained macaroni back into the pot with the cheese sauce. Stir well to coat all the macaroni with the creamy cheese sauce.

  2. 8

    Serve

Serve immediately, garnished with extra cheese or breadcrumbs if desired.
