Method

Prepare the Pastry

  1. 1

    Thaw Phyllo Dough

Remove the phyllo dough from the freezer and allow it to thaw in the refrigerator overnight or at room temperature for about 1-2 hours.

  2. 2

    Melt Butter

In a small saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over low heat. Once melted, remove from heat and set aside.

Prepare the Nut Filling

  1. 3

    Chop Nuts

In a food processor, combine the walnuts and pistachios. Pulse until coarsely chopped. Be careful not to grind them too finely.

  2. 4

    Mix Filling Ingredients

In a mixing bowl, combine the chopped nuts, sugar, and ground cinnamon. Mix well and set aside.

Assemble the Baklava

  1. 5

    Layer Phyllo and Nut Filling

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish. Lay one sheet of phyllo dough in the dish and brush it lightly with melted butter. Repeat this step, layering 8 sheets of phyllo, brushing each layer with butter. Spread a layer of the nut filling (about 1/4 of the total filling) over the phyllo. Continue layering, adding 2 sheets of buttered phyllo, then another layer of nuts. Repeat this process until all the filling is used, finishing with 8 layers of buttered phyllo on top.

  2. 6

    Cut Baklava

Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes before baking, cutting through the top layers down to the filling.

Bake and Prepare Syrup

  1. 7

    Bake Baklava

Bake in the preheated oven for about 45-50 minutes or until the top is golden brown and crispy.

  2. 8

    Prepare Honey Syrup

While the baklava is baking, combine honey, water, and vanilla extract in a saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat and let simmer for about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.

Finish Baklava

  1. 9

    Pour Syrup Over Baklava

Once the baklava is finished baking, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the honey syrup evenly over the hot baklava. Allow it to soak in and cool for at least 4 hours before serving.

  2. 10

    Serve

Cut through the baklava again if needed and serve at room temperature. Enjoy your homemade baklava!
