Method
Bagel Directions
- 1
Prepare the Dough
In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until foamy. Add salt and flour gradually, mixing until a dough forms.
- 2
Knead the Dough
Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Form it into a ball.
- 3
First Rise
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- 4
Shape the Bagels
Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball, then poke a hole through the center with your finger to form a bagel shape.
- 5
Second Rise
Place the shaped bagels on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cover, and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
- 6
- 7
Bake the Bagels
Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Place boiled bagels on a baking sheet dusted with cornmeal. Add toppings if desired. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
- 8
Cool and Serve
Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack. Serve warm or toasted.
