Pasta Preparation

Cook the Spaghetti
In a large pot of boiling salted water, add the spaghetti and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Reserve 1 cup of pasta water, then drain the rest and set aside.

Cook the Sausage
In a large skillet over medium heat, add the olive oil. Once hot, add the pork sausage. Cook, breaking it apart with a spatula until browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes.

Add Garlic and Chili
Add the minced garlic and Calabrian chili paste to the skillet. Sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

Add Tomatoes and Seasoning
Stir in the crushed tomatoes, black pepper, and sugar. Bring to a simmer and let it cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Combine Pasta and Sauce
Add the cooked spaghetti to the sauce in the skillet. Toss to coat the spaghetti in the sauce, adding reserved pasta water a little at a time until desired consistency is reached.

Serve the spaghetti hot, topped with grated Parmesan cheese and fresh basil leaves.
