Base

Optional flavoring (choose any, each optional)

Garnish (optional)

Method

Prepare water and equipment

1

Chill water

Place 1 cup of cold still water in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes or use very cold tap water. Carbonation holds better when water is cold.

2

Prepare soda maker or siphon

Ensure your soda maker or siphon is clean and assembled per manufacturer instructions. Insert a fresh CO2 cartridge or connect the CO2 cylinder as required.

Carbonate

3

Pour the chilled water into the soda maker or siphon bottle up to the fill line. Secure the bottle to the machine or attach the siphon head according to the device instructions.

4

Activate the carbonation: for countertop soda makers, press the carbonation button/pump in bursts (usually 3–5 short presses) to achieve medium to high effervescence. For siphons, open the cartridge chamber to release CO2 and shake gently if directed. Aim for about 3–4 volumes of CO2 for a bright sparkling water.

5

Release the bottle from the machine carefully. If using a soda maker with a pressure release, follow the device's safe-release steps to avoid foaming.

Optional flavoring and serving

6

If adding flavoring, choose one: add up to 1/2 tsp fresh lemon or lime juice, 2 fresh mint leaves gently bruised, or 3 thin cucumber slices. For a slightly sweet version, add 1/2 tsp simple syrup. Add flavoring to the bottom of a tall glass.

7

Fill the glass with ice cubes if desired (about 4) and pour the freshly carbonated water over the flavoring and ice to combine. Stir gently once with a bar spoon to incorporate flavors without losing too much carbonation.

8

Garnish with a citrus wheel or wedge on the rim and a sprig of mint or a cucumber slice if used. Serve immediately to enjoy the best effervescence.
