Preparing the Burger Patty

Season the Beef
In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef with salt and black pepper. Mix gently to avoid overworking the meat.

Shape the seasoned beef into a single 1/2-inch thick patty.
Cooking the Sautéed Vegetables

Sauté the Onions
Slice the onion thinly. Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a skillet over medium heat, add the onions, and sauté until they are soft and caramelized, about 10 minutes.

Cook the Bacon
In a separate pan, cook the heirloom smoked bacon over medium heat until crispy. Drain on paper towels and set aside.

Stir in red beans, canned diced tomatoes, chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Simmer for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Adjust seasoning to taste.
