Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass in the freezer for 5 minutes, or fill it with ice water while you prepare the drink to cool the glass.

  2. 2

    Combine ingredients

In a mixing glass or Boston shaker without the shaker tin, add 2 oz rye whiskey, 1 oz sweet vermouth, and 2 dashes of Angostura bitters.

  3. 3

    Add ice and stir

Add 3 large ice cubes to the mixing glass. Stir gently with a bar spoon for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 full rotations) until the mixture is well-chilled, slightly diluted, and nicely glossy.

  4. 4

    Prepare glass and garnish

Discard the ice water from the chilled serving glass if used. Strain the stirred cocktail through a Hawthorne or julep strainer into the chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass.

  5. 5

    Finish

Garnish with one maraschino cherry on a pick and, if desired, express an orange peel over the drink (hold the peel 2–3 inches above the surface and give a sharp squeeze to release the oils), then drop the peel into the glass. Serve immediately.
