- 1
Prepare espresso
Brew a fresh shot of espresso (about 1 oz). If you don't have an espresso machine, brew very strong coffee. Allow it to cool slightly (30–60 seconds) so it's hot but not boiling; this helps form crema when shaken.
- 2
Chill glass
Place a martini or coupe glass in the freezer for at least 5 minutes, or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to chill it.
- 3
Combine ingredients
In a cocktail shaker, add 1 cup of ice, 2 oz vodka, 1 oz coffee liqueur, 1 oz freshly brewed espresso, and 0.5 oz simple syrup.
- 4
Dry shake (optional)
For extra froth, first shake the ingredients without ice (dry shake) for 10 seconds to help emulsify the espresso crema with the liqueur and vodka.
- 5
Wet shake
If you performed a dry shake, add the ice now. If not, shake the filled shaker vigorously for 12–18 seconds until the outside of the shaker is very cold and you see a thick, foamy layer forming.
- 6
Strain
Double-strain the cocktail into the chilled martini/coupe glass using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine mesh strainer to remove small ice fragments and ensure a silky texture and stable crema on top.
- 7
Garnish and serve
Float three whole coffee beans on the foam. Serve immediately.
