Croissant Ingredients

Method

Croissant Preparation

  1. 1

    Activate the Yeast

In a small bowl, combine warm milk (about 110°F) with the active dry yeast and sugar. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.

  2. 2

    Make the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the activated yeast mixture, the egg, and water. Mix until a dough forms.

  3. 3

    Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

  4. 4

    Prepare the Butter Layer

While the dough is rising, prepare the butter layer. Place the unsalted butter between two sheets of parchment paper and roll it out into a rectangle about 1/2 inch thick. Chill in the refrigerator until the dough has risen.

  5. 5

    Incorporate Butter

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out into a rectangle. Place the chilled butter layer in the center and fold the dough over the butter, sealing the edges.

  6. 6

    Laminate the Dough

Roll out the dough/butter packet into a long rectangle, then fold it into thirds (like a letter). Repeat this rolling and folding process two more times, chilling the dough for 30 minutes between each fold.

  7. 7

    Shape the Croissants

After the final fold, roll the dough out to about 1/4 inch thick. Cut into triangles and roll each triangle from the wide end to the point to form a croissant shape.

  8. 8

    Final Proof

Place the shaped croissants on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover with a cloth and let them rise for about 30 minutes.

  9. 9

    Bake the Croissants

Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Bake the croissants for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown and flaky.

  10. 10

    Serve Warm

Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving warm. Enjoy your homemade croissants!
