For the Onion Rings

Method

Prepare the Onion Rings

  1. 1

    Slice the Onions

Peel the onions and slice them into 1/2-inch thick rings. Separate the rings and set them aside.

  2. 2

    Make the Batter

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Whisk together until well blended.

  3. 3

    Add Cold Water

Gradually add the cold water to the dry ingredients, whisking until the batter is smooth and has a consistency similar to pancake batter.

Fry the Onion Rings

  1. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a deep frying pan, heat the oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the heat by dropping a small amount of batter into the oil; it should sizzle and rise to the top.

  2. 5

    Coat the Onion Rings

Dip each onion ring into the batter, allowing any excess to drip off before carefully placing it into the hot oil.

  3. 6

    Fry Until Golden Brown

Fry the onion rings in batches, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Cook for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until they are golden brown and crispy.

  4. 7

    Drain and Serve

Once cooked, remove the onion rings from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Serve hot, with your favorite dipping sauce.
