Base & Spirits

Method

Prep & Mix

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a Collins or highball glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to ensure the drink stays cold once poured.

  2. 2

    Combine base ingredients

In a cocktail shaker, add 2 oz gin, 0.5 oz dry vermouth, 0.5 oz fresh lemon juice, and 0.25 oz simple syrup. Fill the shaker with ice until about 3/4 full.

  3. 3

    Shake

Secure the shaker lid and shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds until the outside of the shaker feels very cold and you see slight frost forming. This chills and slightly dilutes the mixture for balance.

Assemble & Serve

  1. 4

    Strain and top

Discard any ice or water from the chilled glass, then double-strain the shaken mixture into the glass over fresh ice (use a Hawthorne strainer and fine mesh if available). Top with about 3 oz chilled sparkling water or club soda. Stir gently once with a bar spoon to integrate; avoid vigorous stirring to preserve carbonation.

  2. 5

    Garnish

Express the oils of a lemon twist over the surface of the drink by holding the twist about 2–3 inches above the cocktail and giving it a quick squeeze. Rim the glass with the peel and drop it into the drink, or float a thin lemon wheel on top.

  3. 6

    Serve

Serve immediately while sparkling. Provide a straw or stirrer if desired.
