Method
Guacamole Base
- 1
Prepare avocados
Slice avocados lengthwise, twist to separate halves, remove pits, and scoop flesh into a medium mixing bowl.
- 2
Mash and season
Using a fork or potato masher, mash avocados to your desired texture (chunky or smooth). Immediately add fresh lime juice and kosher salt; stir to combine. The lime juice brightens flavor and slows browning.
- 3
Taste and adjust base seasoning: add additional salt (up to 0.25 tsp) or another 1/2 tablespoon lime juice as needed.
Aromatics & Texture
- 4
- 5
- 6
Taste and adjust: add a pinch more salt or a squeeze of lime if flavors feel flat.
Optional Enhancements
- 7
If using cumin or red pepper flakes, sprinkle them in now and fold gently to incorporate. Cumin adds earthy warmth; red pepper flakes add heat.
- 8
For a fruity twist, fold in finely diced mango or pineapple at this stage to add sweetness and contrast. For a creamy, salty note, sprinkle crumbled queso fresco or feta on top just before serving.
Finish & Serve
- 9
Transfer the guacamole to a serving bowl. For a nice presentation and to slow browning, press a piece of plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the guacamole (optional).
- 10
Garnish with a few cilantro leaves, a light sprinkle of crumbled cheese if using, and serve with lime wedges and tortilla chips.
- 11
Leftovers: store in an airtight container with plastic wrap pressed on the surface or a thin layer of lime juice on top; refrigerate up to 24 hours.
