Guacamole Base

For Serving

Method

Guacamole Base

  1. 1

    Prepare avocados

Slice avocados lengthwise, twist to separate halves, remove pits, and scoop flesh into a medium mixing bowl.

  2. 2

    Mash and season

Using a fork or potato masher, mash avocados to your desired texture (chunky or smooth). Immediately add fresh lime juice and kosher salt; stir to combine. The lime juice brightens flavor and slows browning.

  3. 3

Taste and adjust base seasoning: add additional salt (up to 0.25 tsp) or another 1/2 tablespoon lime juice as needed.

Aromatics & Texture

  1. 4

    Prep aromatics

Finely dice the red onion and roma tomato, finely mince the jalapeño (remove seeds for milder heat), mince the garlic, and chop the cilantro. If you prefer milder onion flavor, rinse the diced onion under cold water and drain well; pat dry before using.

  2. 5

    Fold in aromatics

Gently fold the diced red onion, roma tomato, jalapeño, garlic, and chopped cilantro into the mashed avocado. Stir just until evenly distributed, keeping the mixture slightly chunky for texture.

  3. 6

Taste and adjust: add a pinch more salt or a squeeze of lime if flavors feel flat.

Optional Enhancements

  1. 7

If using cumin or red pepper flakes, sprinkle them in now and fold gently to incorporate. Cumin adds earthy warmth; red pepper flakes add heat.

  2. 8

For a fruity twist, fold in finely diced mango or pineapple at this stage to add sweetness and contrast. For a creamy, salty note, sprinkle crumbled queso fresco or feta on top just before serving.

Finish & Serve

  1. 9

Transfer the guacamole to a serving bowl. For a nice presentation and to slow browning, press a piece of plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the guacamole (optional).

  2. 10

Garnish with a few cilantro leaves, a light sprinkle of crumbled cheese if using, and serve with lime wedges and tortilla chips.

  3. 11

Leftovers: store in an airtight container with plastic wrap pressed on the surface or a thin layer of lime juice on top; refrigerate up to 24 hours.
