Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a rocks glass in the freezer for a few minutes or fill it with ice water to cool while you mix the drink.

  2. 2

    Combine ingredients

Fill a mixing glass with large ice cubes. Pour in 2 oz Rittenhouse Rye, 1 oz sweet vermouth, and add 2 dashes of Angostura bitters.

  3. 3

    Stir

Using a bar spoon, stir the mixture briskly but smoothly for about 20–30 seconds (roughly 20–30 full rotations) until the drink is well chilled and slightly diluted.

  4. 4

    Prepare glass

Discard the ice or water from the chilled rocks glass. If you like, add one or two large ice cubes to the glass.

  5. 5

    Strain

Strain the stirred mixture into the chilled rocks glass over the ice (or neat if you prefer no ice).

  6. 6

    Garnish & express

Hold an orange peel over the glass and give it a quick squeeze/pinch to express the oils over the surface, then rub the peel rim on the glass and drop it into the drink as garnish.

  7. 7

    Serve

Serve immediately. Sip and enjoy the spicy, rye-forward Manhattan-style cocktail inspired by Louisville's appreciation for classic whiskey drinks.

Optional/Tools

  1. 8

If you do not have a mixing glass, use a cocktail shaker without shaking (add ice and stir in the shaker). A julep strainer or Hawthorne strainer may be used when pouring.
