Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place an old-fashioned glass or rocks glass in the freezer for a few minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the drink to chill the glass.

  2. 2

    Build and stir

Add High West rye whiskey, sweet vermouth, amaro, simple syrup, Angostura bitters, and orange bitters into a mixing glass filled halfway with ice. Stir briskly for 20–30 seconds (about 15–20 full turns) until well chilled and slightly diluted.

  3. 3

    Prepare glass

Discard ice water from the chilled glass if used and add a large ice cube or sphere to the glass.

  4. 4

    Strain

Strain the stirred cocktail into the prepared glass over the large ice cube using a Hawthorne or julep strainer to remove small ice shards.

  5. 5

    Garnish

Express the oils from the orange peel over the drink by holding it skin-side down above the glass and giving it a firm twist; run the peel around the rim and drop it into the drink as garnish.

  6. 6

    Serve

Serve immediately. Sip slowly to enjoy the balance of rye spice, sweet vermouth richness, and the bitters/amaro complexity.
