Cocktail

Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Measure and combine

Add 2 oz reposado tequila and 0.5 oz añejo tequila to a mixing glass (or directly to an old-fashioned glass if you prefer minimal ware).

  2. 2

    Add sweetener and bitters

Add 0.25 oz agave nectar and 3 dashes Angostura bitters plus 1 dash orange bitters to the mixing glass with the tequilas.

  3. 3

    Stir with ice

Fill the mixing glass with large cubed ice. Stir gently with a bar spoon for 20–30 seconds (about 15–20 full turns) until well chilled and slightly diluted. If you mixed in the serving glass, stir gently until chilled and lightly diluted.

  4. 4

    Prepare glass and ice

Place a single large ice cube or sphere in an old-fashioned glass.

  5. 5

    Strain and garnish

Strain the chilled cocktail over the large ice cube in the serving glass. Express the oils of an orange peel over the drink by holding the peel skin-side down and giving it a firm twist 2–3 times over the surface, then rub the peel around the glass rim and drop it in as garnish. Add a Luxardo or brandied cherry if desired.

  6. 6

    Serve

Serve immediately. Sip slowly to appreciate the layered oak and agave flavors; the small addition of añejo adds depth and a touch of vanilla/caramel while the agave keeps sweetness balanced.

Equipment & Notes

  1. 7

If you prefer a slightly boozier profile, reduce agave to 0.2 oz. For a smokier note, substitute a small float (0.25 oz) of mezcal on top instead of añejo tequila. Use fresh agave nectar for a cleaner agave flavor; simple syrup (1:1) works as a substitute in equal volume.
