Cocktail

Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a rocks glass (or coupe, if preferred) in the freezer or fill it with ice water to chill while you build the cocktail.

  2. 2

    Measure and combine

In a mixing glass or small mixing pitcher, add 2 oz rye whiskey, 0.75 oz dry vermouth, 0.25 oz amaro, 0.25 oz cassis, 2 dashes orange bitters and 1 dash aromatic bitters. If you prefer a slightly sweeter finish, add up to 0.25 tsp simple syrup; otherwise omit.

  3. 3

    Add ice and stir

Fill the mixing glass with large ice cubes (6 pieces or enough to fill). Stir gently but steadily for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 full strokes) until the mixture is well-chilled, slightly diluted, and the outside of the mixing glass feels cold.

  4. 4

    Prepare glass

Discard the chilling ice/water from your serving glass and, if desired, add one large clear ice cube to the glass. Strain the cocktail from the mixing glass into the chilled serving glass using a julep or hawthorne strainer.

  5. 5

    Garnish and finish

Express the oil of an orange peel over the drink by holding the peel skin-side down 2–3 inches over the glass and giving it a quick squeeze to release the zest oil, then rub the peel around the rim and drop it into the drink. Optionally add a Luxardo or brandied cherry on a pick. Serve immediately.
