Sober Negroni (Rocks) - Directions
1. Chill glass
Place a rocks glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice and cold water while you prepare the drink to chill the glass.
2. Measure ingredients
Measure 1 oz non-alcoholic red aperitif (bitter-forward), 1 oz non-alcoholic dry vermouth-style aperitif, and 1 oz non-alcoholic sweet vermouth-style aperitif into a mixing glass or small pitcher. If you prefer the cocktail slightly less bitter, also have 0.25 oz cold water or soda water ready to add.
3. Stir with ice
Fill the mixing glass with plenty of ice. Stir the mixture for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 strokes) until well chilled and slightly diluted. This both chills and softens the bitter edges.
4. Prepare serving glass
Discard the ice/water from the chilled rocks glass (if used) and add one large clear ice cube or enough fresh ice to fill the glass about three-quarters full.
5. Strain
Strain the stirred mixture over the large ice cube in the prepared rocks glass.
6. Adjust bitterness (optional)
If the drink tastes too bitter, add up to 0.25 oz cold water or soda water and give the drink one gentle stir to integrate. Taste and adjust in 0.25 oz increments until it reaches your preferred balance.
7. Garnish and serve
Express the oils from an orange peel over the surface of the drink by holding the peel over the glass and giving it a firm squeeze so the oils spray onto the cocktail. Rub the peel around the glass rim, then drop the twist into the drink or perch an orange slice on the rim. Serve immediately.
