Cocktail

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place the rock glass in the freezer for a few minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail so the glass is nicely chilled.

  2. 2

    Measure ingredients

Measure 2 oz gin, 1 oz Campari, and 1 oz sweet vermouth. Add 2 dashes of orange bitters to enhance citrus aromatics.

Mixing

  1. 3

    Stir with ice

Fill a mixing glass with the large ice cubes. Pour in the gin, Campari, sweet vermouth, and add the orange bitters. Stir briskly but smoothly for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 full rotations) until the mixture is well chilled, slightly diluted, and has a silky texture.

  2. 4

    Prepare serving glass

Dump the ice or water from the chilled rock glass. Add one large clear ice cube or two large cubes (or a small handful of cracked ice if preferred).

  3. 5

    Strain

Strain the stirred cocktail from the mixing glass into the prepared rock glass over the large ice cube(s). If you like a slighter colder drink, top with a small handful of cracked ice.

Garnish & Finish

  1. 6

    Express and garnish

Take the orange peel and hold it skin-side down over the drink. Give it a firm twist to express oils across the surface, then rub the rim of the glass with the peel and drop the twist into the drink or hang it on the rim. If using, add one Luxardo or brandied cherry on a pick.

  2. 7

Optional: for added aroma, hold the twist an inch above the drink and give it an extra spritz of expressed orange oil before dropping it in.
