Cocktail
- 1
Prepare glass
Place a large old-fashioned glass (or rocks glass) on your workspace. If you prefer a chilled drink, chill the glass briefly by filling with ice and water while you gather ingredients, then discard before proceeding.
- 2
Add bitters and syrup
Add 2 dashes aromatic bitters, 1 dash orange bitters, and 0.25 oz (about 3/4 tablespoon) demerara or simple syrup into the glass.
- 3
Add whiskey
Pour 2 oz bourbon or rye whiskey over the bitters and syrup in the glass.
- 4
Add ice and stir
Add one large ice cube (or several large cubes) to the glass. Stir gently for about 20–30 seconds (about 15–20 full rotations) until the drink is well chilled and slightly diluted — this both integrates the ingredients and mellows the spirit.
- 5
Express orange oil and garnish
Take an orange peel and hold it over the glass, skin side down. Give the peel a sharp twist to express the citrus oils over the surface of the cocktail, then rub the peel around the glass rim and drop it into the drink. Optionally add a Luxardo or brandied cherry on a cocktail pick and rest it on the cube.
- 6
Serve
Serve immediately. Sip slowly to appreciate the balance of whiskey, bitters, and sugar.
