Method
Cold Brew Concentrate
- 1
Measure and grind coffee
Measure 1 cup of whole-bean coffee (about 85–90 g). Grind to a coarse, even texture similar to raw sugar or kosher salt. A consistent coarse grind helps prevent over-extraction and makes filtration easier.
- 2
Combine coffee and water
Place the ground coffee in a clean 1.5–2 quart (1.5–2 L) jar, pitcher, or French press. Pour 4 cups (about 960 ml) of cold filtered water evenly over the grounds. Use a spoon to gently stir, ensuring all grounds are saturated and there are no dry clumps.
- 3
Steep
Cover the container with a lid, plastic wrap, or a towel to keep out odors. Steep at room temperature or in the refrigerator for 16 to 20 hours. For a slightly brighter flavor, steep 12–16 hours; for a richer, stronger concentrate, 18–20 hours.
- 4
Filter the concentrate
After steeping, strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve lined with a double layer of cheesecloth, a nut-milk bag, or a coffee filter into a clean pitcher or bowl. If using a French press, press the plunger down slowly and pour through a fine filter to remove fines. If needed, filter a second time to remove remaining sediment for a clearer concentrate.
- 5
Store
Transfer the filtered cold brew concentrate to an airtight glass container or bottle and refrigerate. The concentrate will keep chilled for up to 7–10 days; for best flavor, consume within 5 days.

Sweeten and flavor
If desired, stir in 1–2 teaspoons simple syrup (or other sweetener) and up to 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Simple syrup mixes better than granulated sugar when cold.

Serve over ice
Fill a serving glass with ice (about 1 cup), pour the diluted cold brew over the ice, stir gently, and enjoy. Optionally garnish with a splash of cream or a citrus twist.
