Method
Cooking the Rice
- 1
Rinse the Rice
In a fine mesh strainer, rinse 1 cup of long grain rice under cold water until the water runs clear. This helps to remove excess starch.
- 2
Cook the Rice
In a medium saucepan, combine the rinsed rice and 2 cups of water. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 18-20 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the water is absorbed.
- 3
Preparing Vegetables and Protein
- 4
Sauté the Vegetables
In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of sesame oil over medium heat. Add the diced bell pepper and shredded carrot. Sauté for 3-5 minutes until the vegetables are tender.
- 5
Add Protein
If using, add the diced cooked chicken breast or cubed tofu to the skillet and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, stirring frequently.
Making the Sauce
- 6
Combine Sauce Ingredients
In a small bowl, mix together 3 tablespoons of soy sauce, 2 teaspoons of minced garlic, and 1 teaspoon of minced ginger. Pour this sauce over the sautéed vegetables and protein in the skillet.
- 7
Simmer
Allow the mixture to simmer for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally until everything is well coated and heated through.
Assembling the Bowl
- 8
Combine Rice and Sauté
Add the fluffed rice to the skillet with the vegetable and protein mixture. Gently fold everything together until evenly mixed.
- 9
Serve
Spoon the rice bowl mixture into serving bowls. Top with sliced green onions, sesame seeds, and chopped cilantro before serving.
