Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Activate Yeast

In a small bowl, mix the warm milk (110°F) with the active dry yeast and granulated sugar. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt. Make a well in the center.

  3. 3

    Combine Ingredients

Once the yeast is activated, pour it into the well along with melted unsalted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract. Mix until a dough forms.

  4. 4

    Knead the Dough

Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  5. 5

    First Rise

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Filling Preparation

  1. 6

    Prepare Cream Cheese Filling

In a mixing bowl, beat together the cream cheese, powdered sugar, lemon zest, and vanilla extract until smooth and creamy.

Assembly & Baking

  1. 7

    Shape the Dough

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and turn it out onto a floured surface. Roll it out into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.

  2. 8

    Add Filling

Spread the cream cheese filling evenly over the dough rectangle, leaving a small border around the edges.

  3. 9

    Roll and Cut

Starting from one long edge, roll the dough tightly into a log. Cut the log into equal pieces, about 2 inches wide.

  4. 10

    Second Rise

Place the cut pieces on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover with a cloth and let rise for another 30-45 minutes.

  5. 11

    Preheat Oven

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

  6. 12

    Egg Wash and Bake

Brush the top of each Danish with the egg wash and sprinkle with sliced almonds. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

  7. 13

    Cool and Dust

Allow the Danishes to cool on a wire rack. Once cooled, dust with powdered sugar before serving.
