Main Ingredients

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Sort and Rinse the Beans

Begin by sorting through the dried beans to remove any debris or damaged beans. Rinse the beans thoroughly under cold water.

  2. 2

    Soak the Beans (Optional)

To reduce cooking time and improve digestibility, soak the beans in a large bowl with enough water to cover them by at least 2 inches for 4-8 hours or overnight. If short on time, you can skip this step.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Cook the Beans

In a large pot, add the rinsed beans and 6 cups of fresh water. Bring to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 1-2 hours, or until the beans are tender. Stir occasionally and add more water if necessary to keep the beans submerged.

  2. 4

    Season the Beans

Once the beans are tender, add salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and olive oil. Stir well to combine and allow the beans to cook for an additional 10-15 minutes to absorb the flavors.

  3. 5

    Serve the Beans

Remove from heat and let cool slightly. If using fresh herbs, chop and sprinkle on top before serving. Enjoy your beans as a side dish or in salads, tacos, or grain bowls.
